Even in the 18 hundred’s they knew the importance of vacuuming carpets and rugs prior to cleaning, as shown by this horse drawn vacuum cleaner.

You spend an age looking for a new carpet for your home, the feel and the colour have to be just right. It is ordered and fitted, looks great doesn’t it. Okay no drinks in here and no shoes. As soon as month or so later, what is that ugly wavy line in the carpet and why does it look like someone has thrown a bucket of water down.
What you have here is known as Shading, Pile reversal or Water marking. It is not a common condition, but it will be permanent. Carpet manufacturers will not accept responsibility for the problem.
This can happen in rugs as well as carpet of different construction types and fibres. It is where the pile lays in different directions to each other and the normal lay of the carpet. Areas of the carpet look light from one direction and dark from another. The light reflecting off the tips of the fibres is less reflective and will appear darker. The light reflecting off the sides of the fibre will appear lighter. Carpet cleaning can highlight the problem as a clean carpet will reflect the light better and highlight shading problems.

Starting early has its advantages, view from an apartment in Knightsbridge at sunrise. As I was there to work, this is a little bit of what we do.

Silk and alcohol this week, not the best combination to hear on the phone but I have some very nice solutions and a lot of experience. The first job was upholstery cleaning to a silk cushion that had a number of red wine spots on it. Luckily the client left well alone. Spills I can do, damage I cannot. So if you spill anything on an expensive item or any item for that matter just blot, leave alone and give me a call, I will come and give it the Elbow.
The second job was carpet cleaning where there were some spills onto a wool carpet with silk inlays. Well, just where you would expect a spill to be. Spots out, happy clients and drinks are round their friends next time. I will wait for the call.
